And the thing is that unless you count the tourist areas that didn't get badly damaged in the first place, not a damn thing has changed. There are areas in NOLA that are ghost towns. There are areas that are one big vacant lot.

If there was one thing good about Hurricane Katrina, it was this: the hurricane in 2005 directly led to the GOP defeat in 2006. Hopefully the reportage about the current situation in NOLA will keep people thinking about it and lead to a veto-proof Democratic majority in 2008 and a Democrat in the White House. Certainly one Republican candidate, John McCain, has reaped much bad publicity from the 8/29/2005 photo op where he and Dubya yukked it up at an Air Force base and ate cake.

We cannot forget NOLA. We cannot abandon NOLA. If the birthplace of America's greatest contribution to world music is left to become a gentrified, Disneyfied shadow of its former self, the soul of America will really and truly be lost.

Here are a couple of very cogent essays about the aftermath, two years on:

AP Editorial: Pay heed to New Orleans' plight
Shelley Midura's open letter to George W. Friday's collection got 1.2 million cells...not great, but not bad. The doctor suggested an afternoon collection the next time, giving the Neupogen time to work some more before collection because Richie would give himself the shot every day after breakfast. That was damn good advice, because the collection yesterday got 18 million (yes, I'm putting my pinky to my mouth when I type this) stem cells. All that in one swell foop. Amazing. Lots of celebrating. The target was 9 million, with 6 as a bare minimum. Now we have enough for the second in the Tandem transplant if that's going to be part of the protocol.

Richie has been scheduled to go into CoH Helford Research Hospital on 9/7/2007, with a consultation the day before. I'm going to have to take a day off from school to attend the consultation.

The tales of hard-fought success with SCTs I have been reading on the Myeloma mailing list have been comforting to me, although sometimes scary considering the kind of side effects people have had to battle. I am still of two minds about this, considering how well Richie's disease has been managed under the Velcade/Doxil/Dex protocol, and all the horrible experiences some of you have had. While I haven't heard of people dying of the procedure (I'm sure there are a few in the literature) it sounds like some of you wished you were dead through the process.

On Richie's side are two things: his relative youth and his baseline health outside of the MM. He's 54 years old, and likely will still be in Helford for his 55th birthday on the 21st. It's sort of like saying "Other than that nasty business, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" but he is in excellent health otherwise. Cardio's great, Pulmonary's great, no other diseases, and right now he's getting back into walking and has been working with a physical therapist. He's been in a pain-free period where he hasn't had to use opiates.

I'm worried. I'm not looking forward to the separation. He's looking forward to it, in spite of all the potential for danger, misery and possibly even death. And once Richie Hass has decided he's going to do something, he won't be dissuaded. He's a stubborn cuss.

I don't want to lose him. However, on the Buddhist tip, one must remember that all things are impermanent. The anxiety is killing me. But I need to let him do this, and prepare myself to let go of him if something goes wrong. "I want a chance to get healthy" is his refrain. He's willing to take this very big calculated risk. I suppose I need to be supportive and just let him do it. But it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-52847694700816826492007-06-18T13:10:00.000-07:002007-06-18T13:12:49.338-07:00Geek shock horror! The bone marrow biopsy done exactly a week ago was clear...free of the mutant plasma cells which are the hallmark of multiple myeloma. There is still a small amount of M-Spike protein in his blood, but it's down to a fraction of what was there originally.

Plans are being drawn up now for a stem cell transplant. It's a bit of a scary procedure but Richie's absolutely adamant about going forward with it. I will keep everyone posted about it.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-85288874723612992072007-06-08T13:02:00.001-07:002007-06-08T13:22:37.630-07:00Sympathy for the DevilWow. I'm in a very weird position right now. I find myself having sympathy for Paris Hilton.

It really does seem like Judge Sauer (perhaps an appropriate name for the guy, it's pronounced "sour") has it seriously in for her. Of all the people who have complained about her getting "celebrity justice," it seems like Judge Sauer alone had the ability and the inclination to do something about it. And he did.

So here's where it all stands. Paris Hilton is going back to Solitary Confinement at Lynwood Women's Jail. She's going to do the whole 40 days left on her sentence, not 20 as was originally intended. In other words, she is going to get far worse treatment than the average person who is arrested for violating probation for driving with a suspended license. The average person is allowed to serve out their sentence under house arrest, provided they have the $100/day rental for the equipment. The average person usually only does a week in jail for this misdemeanor. The average person is often given the option of serving an alternative sentence of community service even in the case of someone who can't afford house arrest.

Personally, I would rather see her have to do 80 hours of community service instead of this jailing. It would do far more for her moral correction for her to have to work at, say, the Midnight Mission serving food to homeless people, or on a trash pickup detail like Naomi Campbell had to do. It would mean having to cut those perfectly manicured nails and wear something unfashionable for a change, like orange coveralls, in public. It would mean actually having to work. What a concept!Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-30573533520677982202007-05-19T22:45:00.000-07:002007-05-19T22:46:46.557-07:00Thoughts IRL about WWO...For the past few days, I've been talespinning at World Without Oil with more than 1,000 other people. It's made me think...a LOT...about the precariousness of our society.

We are currently having what seems like a brush fire a day. What would we do if there wasn't diesel to fuel the fire trucks, or jet fuel to fuel the tanker planes and helicopters? What would we do if people didn't have the gas to pack the car and drive out of harm's way?

The thing is, the scenario of a short, sharp Oil Shock that we are playing out at WWO is not likely, but a slow-motion version of this dance, played out over a space of years, or at best, decades, is a scientific fact. Aside from a few crackpots who hold to a belief that petroleum can be found which does not originate from dead vegetation or dead critters, (the abiotic oil theorists) our supply of oil comes from a finite amount of sources. Eventually, it will all be gone. However, the period from the end of "cheap" oil to the last drop coming out of the ground is where we are at right now.

It is not like we weren't warned. I lived through the Energy Crisis of the 1970s. Odd/Even gas days, Double Nickels, gas lines, and prices soaring to stratospheric heights that we would see as bargains now. The oil shocks of 1973 and 1979 were warnings that we needed to get off the oil teat.

We needed a Manhattan Project-level commitment to developing alternative fuels, but November, 1980 brought the end of the Carter era, and the beginning of almost 30 years of a "Don't worry, be happy" fuel policy. Yes, Clinton was guilty of blissfully ignoring the same warning signs that Reagan, Bush the Elder, and Bush the Younger also ignored. The mania for SUVs soared during his Presidency, in spite of the environment consciousness of his Vice President, Gore.

There are other reasons to get us weaned off of fossil fuel, and Gore managed to cover most of them in the movie An Inconvenient Truth. It's not an especially deep explanation of the current climate crisis, but it's an easy and entertaining way to get an introduction to it.

We should have started dealing with this in 1973. We really should have started dealing with this in 1979. We're really not doing much of anything substantive about it now. The question is this: are we too late? Between the scylla of costlier and costlier oil, and the charybdis of Global Climate Crisis, we might be too late to do anything about this, short of just waiting for the die-off.

It's been a fun exercise, though. I won't be able to obsessively participate on the level I have been participating in this for the past few days thanks to the upcoming events surrounding Celebration IV, but at least I have been doing well with it, if I say so myself.

You can read my posts at http://msgeekwithoutoil.blogspot.com/. Also why is their webmail so goddamn slow?

It seems like DSLX is losing its mojo. I was worried when that company from Utah bought them. Now my worries seem to be somewhat coming true. They went so far as to ask California's Representatives and Congresspeople what they would think of changing the rules and allowing the foreign-born to run for the highest office in the land.

Don't take my word for it: here is the article, preserved as a PDF.(131Kb)

Here is my humble, considered opinion on the subject.

Sure, let a naturalized foreign-born individual run for the Presidency. I would not object. However, you would have to add one proviso to that amendment to our Constitution: no person who has ever been a member of the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists or Actor's Equity can hold the Presidency.

That's right.

No more former actors as President.

I'm serious here.

Who is our only President who started out his adult life as an actor? Ronald Wilson Reagan. And I'm sorry to all those who still have fond memories of the Great Obfuscator...whoops, I meant The Great Pretender...whoops again, I mean the Great Communicator. Reagan frankly SUCKED as a President. He did. He almost bankrupted the nation, the Soviet Union was teetering at that point anyway and didn't need Reagan's push to go down in a smouldering heap. And he allowed a whole bunch of evil theocrats to get a toe-hold in the GOP who never should have been there and got way too much power than they deserved.

I know this would also mean some really good fantasy candidates for the Highest Office In The Land would also be disqualified. Disqualify Ah-nuld, and you also block off the possibility of a President Martin Sheen, a President Robert Redford, a President Paul Newman, a President Warren Beatty, a President Ed Begley, Jr., or my personal dream actor-President, President Samuel L. "B.M.F." Jackson. But seriously folks. Do we REALLY want another actor in the Highest Office In The Land? Do we? Do we feel lucky?

PS: lest I be accused of anti-Actor prejudice, the title of this post is a reference to the signs that would hang up in boarding houses near the Great White Way in New York City.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-59323715344454091592007-01-10T13:45:00.000-08:002007-01-10T13:54:05.743-08:00Why the word "Escalation" matters. There is a semantic war going on within this Iraq War. George W. Bush and those who still believe in his fools' crusade are persisting in using the term "Surge" to refer to the increase in US troop involvement in the war. However, the term of choice for the reality-based community is "Escalation."

The term Escalation has special meaning for those of us who remember the Vietnam War. Escalation was the favored term in the Johnson and Nixon administrations for bringing in more troops to this unwinnable conflict. Escalation is a reminder that these two conflicts in Iraq and Vietnam are blood-brothers, wars of choice which are costing this country precious human lives and economic treasure.

"Father, Father...we don't need to escalate..." -- Marvin Gaye

A surge is what happens when power snaps back after a blackout. Surge was the predecessor Mountain Dew-like beverage to Coca-Cola's Vault and Vault Zero. The word surge is meaningless to describe an escalation of the conflict in Iraq. This is an ESCALATION. Get it right.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-68678487278390836452007-01-08T15:00:00.000-08:002007-01-08T14:59:48.777-08:00School Daze again...Yes, it's once again time to deal with yet another chapter of the Woodbury Follies. Being in a small school is odd sometimes...word has gotten around about Richie's hospitalization, and now word is going to start getting around about his Multiple Myeloma. People are being uber-supportive, thankfully.

Due to all the uncertainties surrounding the past two weeks, I had to use a book voucher to buy my books, at the clip joint we know and hate as the Woodbury Bookstore. I'm now down almost $350 and I still have to buy some more books, dammit. At least most of them came in used versions. My monetary situation here is squared away and we'll at least get some financial aid overage to keep us going.

I have to keep going with this. Having my bachelor's will be good but unfortunately a BA in Psych is not so helpful in the job market. Once I get my Masters' things will be moving ahead somewhat. Since it has become clear that Richie's time on this planet is limited, and that he will not be able to do as much with that time due to the illness, it is also very clear that if I have a professional degree I will have a better time of it than if I don't have one.

The weight of this past few weeks is on me like a ton of bricks. It's painful. But I have to bear the pain and get through it somehow.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-25333482140481895302006-12-31T08:31:00.000-08:002006-12-31T08:34:45.710-08:00Oshogatsu greetings...Just wishing everyone a happy new year, and a very geeky Otakushogatsu.

Here's my card.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-43551631864394123062006-12-26T22:00:00.001-08:002006-12-26T22:00:33.971-08:00It's Multiple Myeloma. The diagnosis is in. Richie's got Multiple Myeloma, which is a cancer of the bone marrow. It sounds super-scary at first but it actually is a fairly slow-moving disease that can be managed with both a current generation of drugs and a new generation that is being rolled out. It's not great news but it isn't a death sentence either.

My family is rallying around us, and so is what's left of Richie's family. We should be OK.

Thanks to all who have been thinking good thoughts, meditating, praying, and whatever else. It is appreciated. Please keep it going.

And the doctors, nurses, orderlies, respiratory therapists, counselors, case managers and so forth at Mission Community Hospital have been wonderful. Small hospital, big heart, good people.

I'll keep everyone posted about updates, unless TMI is involved.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-85466999870883694842006-12-25T23:10:00.000-08:002006-12-25T23:10:30.082-08:00I feel (not so) good.It is going to be a fucking drag to break the news to Richie that James Brown is dead.

I can't keep this news from him. Regardless of what he's feeling like right now. I have to. It's my duty as his eyes and ears. He's sworn off TV and the Radio as part of his healing strategy, but I get him the paper every day. And it's going to be in there, of course.

As far as Richie's condition, things are actually better, believe it or not. There is now a theory of why Richie's experiencing what he's experiencing, and it is a curable, and also thankfully not fatal condition. It's called Hyperparathyroidism and basically results from the Parathyroid glands going out of control and leeching calcium from the bones and putting it into the bloodstream.

Hopefully if that is the explanation things will resolve well. If not...as Borat would say, "not so much."

Update: the other possibility is Multiple Myeloma. As cancers go, it's not horrible, but it's not great. You can die of it, but you can also linger for years and years and maybe even do OK. My Great Aunt Charlotte had it, but it wasn't what killed her. What usually kills people with Multiple Myeloma is infections (it suppresses the immune system) and the consequences of thinning brittle bones.

We find out about the bone marrow biopsy tomorrow. We hope.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-49431942948359453052006-12-23T07:50:00.000-08:002006-12-23T07:51:14.114-08:00The official grades...and bad news...Here's the official grades:

Meanwhile, Richie is going through a major health crisis. He's in the hospital now. The doctors are either not sure yet what is going on with him or they are keeping their cards very close to their vests. The uncertainty is driving both of us crazy. Even though Richie is strongly urging me to continue with my studies, he's going to need lots of help and so will I if this turns out to be something other than a temporary, immediately curable problem.

Needless to say, this is a really crummy holiday season. Since the death of my father on Christmas Eve Day in 1975 I've been in the "holiday blues" category. No, this isn't my freaking holiday, but the cultural, non-religious aspects of the holidays are still a big part of American life so I've been at least ambivalent about them for most of my life.

But this tops it all. Richie and I have had, rarity of rarities, a really good marriage for almost 20 years. I used to think I'd kill myself if I lost him but I think I have enough of a sense of mission in my life to want to carry on without him, no matter how difficult life will be. I want him to survive this, most importantly. However, if surviving means heroic measures, horribly poisonous chemo, punishing radiation treatments or other "cure is worse than the disease" treatments, he has said he will refuse them. I have to support him on this regardless of how I feel. And to be honest, after seeing what my mom went through, I would likely make the same decision.

I am not a happy camper. But I have to be strong now, for both our sakes.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-59937100246728563112006-12-20T08:20:00.000-08:002006-12-20T08:23:23.760-08:00Grades time...As you recall, it's been already established that I have an A in Stats. Now then. I now know what my grades are for Fall 2006 semester.

Psychology of Gender 3 units B+ 3.33
Personality 3 units A 4.00
Stats for Behavioral Sci 1 4 units A 4.00
Influence and Persuasion 3 units A- 3.66

Total for S2006 3.77 GPA
Total GPA 3.73 GPA

GPA is just about unchanged if you keep the significant digits at two.

The Stats grade isn't officially posted -- Prof. Allevado is being a sweetie and holding the grades to let one straggler student bring his paper in -- but I already knew what he was going to post.

Of course, it's not as good as straight As, but it's still pretty impressive. I am on track to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Woodbury. 3.66 F2005, 3.80 S2006, 3.77 F2006. Woodbury doesn't make a big deal about the Dean's List like LAVC did, but I've been on it every semester since arriving there.

The project I started in Social Psych and continued in Stats 1 will continue into the future. We're going to put the survey on the web so that I can get more respondents. I'm going to have to figure out how to get people interested in the survey, though. Maybe giving away a Wii might be a good move. That costs, though. Time to learn the arcane art of grant proposals.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-622513168144938122006-12-18T18:10:00.000-08:002006-12-18T18:09:30.530-08:00I'm now on Blogger:TNG for all my blogs, past, present and future

OK, now everything has moved over. So I am likely to have an A. Amazing. Freaking amazing.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-2757268856943620682006-12-05T21:00:00.000-08:002006-12-05T21:10:26.082-08:00Three presentations down, one more to go.Today was the day for my presentation about my Stats 1 project. This time I hit it out of the park. Very proud of myself, especially when I consider that the first two presentations was, although trouble free, not up to my high standards.

The project looks like it will continue after Stats 1 is over. This is the one on video games and desensitization to violence. I know the subject matter is going to yank some friends of mine's chains, but it's like this: there is something going on in this data and I want to find out the truth. I don't have an agenda. I would rather be the one to prove all the social scientists wrong about a link between video games and desensitization to violence. But I'm determined to see it through to whatever conclusion the data takes me.

I also have four term papers, two "wrap up the journal" papers that are a lot shorter than the term papers, and one short final exam to take.

I'd better get a move on and quit screwing around blogging....Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-81712660385882757942006-11-30T14:30:00.000-08:002006-11-30T14:37:03.382-08:00Just when I thought I wouldn't blog something for a while......they pull me right back in! (apologies to Al Pacino)

Anyway, I just got finished trying to get people to participate in not one, but TWO surveys for Stats I, and I just heard about this grad student who's trying to get bloggers to link to this post as part of an experiment in spreading a meme. He's doing this for a paper he will actually be presenting to the MLA.

Maybe if I do this I'll generate such good karma that I will be able to get all the participants I need for my next research project. And no doubt there will be more next semester.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811494023307135441.post-30678542188067171102006-11-30T08:30:00.000-08:002006-11-30T08:35:03.869-08:00Update time...

1.) My DSL linespeed is finally up to where I'm happy with it. I was getting something like 500-650 down, but since I'm paying for 768/128 I really, really wanted a scoch more bandwidth. Now I apparently have it. Yay! My upstream speed has always been hovering around a little above 128.

2.) Life with the new lappie has been just lovely. It's way faster than anything I have owned, ever. And when Leopard comes out either in Q1 or Q2 2007 it should be absolutely SSSMOKIN'. And I'm not talking about the heat factor either. The Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit chip. Once more of the system becomes 64-bit native, and there wasn't 64-bit native code up until Tiger, things will only get faster. The big hangup is with the two apps that have to run PPC-to-Intel translated through Rosetta: Office 2004 and Photoshop Elements 4. Everything that's native Universal Binary code tears along happily. As far as heat goes, again, if it has to go through the Rosetta emulator things get warm quickly. If it doesn't, it's surprisingly cool considering the reports about Core Duo (Yonah) in the past. Merom (Core 2 Duo) uses less current draw than the original recipe Core Duo does.

3.) School has been absolutely nucking futz these past few days and it'll only get worse. It's going to be a bumpy ride for the next few days, and Tom Reed's visit down here is not likely to provide a respite.

4.) I will be taking a breather on Saturday for a few items: Apple Store for some helpful podcast hints, Jo-Ann's for $1 Simplicity Patterns (limit 10). Next Saturday it will be patterns from McCall's and Butterick that will be on sale: $2/pattern (limits unknown). That will also be when Tom will be down so who knows when we'll get to those. However, I will need to keep plugging away up until then and after. The first big priority is the Excel spreadsheet for Stats 1. I will be at school all day tonight, so I'm bringing the Happy Lappie with me to finish the job. Maybe I'll even input the 48 cases I need to input on my personal project. Wouldn't that rock?

I will likely observe Internet silence during this crazy period. See you later.Michelle Klein-Hasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13379713170249673023noreply@blogger.com0
